IN PINK WE TRUST

When I was a little Trend Attendant I was typical girly-girl. Everything needed to be pink, with patent leather shoes and preferably ruffle socks. I also went through an all black phase (almost gothic) and wanted nothing to do with anything pink. But pink is back by dope demand and a part of my daily life again. I always have fresh pink roses on the table an I recently bought this awesome pink pouf. And you’ll always find some hint of pink on my Insta feed. A while back I read about this complete pink restaurant that was going to open in Amsterdam. I saw the press release and didn’t even care if they’d serve cockroaches, I.needed.to.visit.this.restaurant! The reservation had to be made way in advance (pink restaurants are very popular, you know) and the other day I could finally stop by and grab a bite to eat. Want to know if Mama Kelly was everything I hoped and so much more? Let’s go.

Mama Kelly Amsterdam is located in the former Olympic stadium and just the location itself is a whole experience. The restaurant is situated on multiple levels and you’re literally sitting  ‘underneath the bleachers’. If you are seated downstairs you’ll be seated on pink (of course) diner booths and on other levels at regular (but pink) tables.

All though the specialties at Mama Kelly are chicken and lobster, no worries, you can also try other meat, fish or veggie dishes.

As a starter I ordered the haloumi salad (it was truly delish).

If you order the steak tartare it will be prepared at your table. If you’d like a bit more spice (or Worcester sauce) just let the chef know.

The starter already satisfied me but I ordered a main course anyway (yes, big eyes, small stomach) I had the spicy chicken (half, how someone can have the entire chicken is beyond me). It came with a small corn cob, fries (Joey doesn’t share food) and spicy gravy.

Oh my god! Michael Bublé, is that you? Michaels ‘Dutch brother’ came to serenade us all.

At the downstairs carrousel bar you can order all kinds of cocktails. My verdict on Mama Kelly Amsterdam: the main course, to be really honest it was ok but I have had better. The starter and dessert were lovely. I had lemon curd for dessert, served in a Libbey whiskey glass and it was more than enough. The pricing, not the cheapest. Dinner for two, three courses (not including alcohol) will set you back about $120. If I was to go again I would definitely stop by for lunch because it’s way better to take pictures by day (I mean, it’s all about the pink interior anyway). Which definitely gets 10 points.

You’ll find Mama Kelly Amsterdam at Olympisch Stadion 35, you can easily park underneath the stadium. And to book a table in advance, go to their website.

There’s also a Mama Kelly in The Hague (not pink though but with chicken and lobster) at Saturnusstraat 100.

Do you love pink interiors just like yours truly? Also worth a visit are:

  • Sticky Fingers for coffee sticky pastries, Amstelveense weg 3, Amsterdam
  • Los Feliz for yummy Mexican food (not completely pink but very colorful, Albert Cuypstraat 88, Amsterdam
  • Pietro Nolita I mean, pink and Italian food, 174 Elizabeth street, New York
  • Sketch London for a pink stiff upper lip high tea, 9 Conduit street, London
